Yubae Room- with Memories of Ozu -
Tateshina Shinyu Onsen has ties with Yasujiro Ozu, the world-renowned Japanese film director. One of the rooms had a beautiful view of the sunset, and he used it many times to entertain guests.
Tateshina Shinyu Onsen recreated the room favored by Yasujiro Ozu based on the testimony of a former employee who knew the room at the time. This room offers a gorgeous view of the sunset, and is named after a film by Ozu about family. It is spacious enough for three generations of your family to relax.

Enjoy a special holiday here with your family.
Yubae Room Story(From an article by Mayumi Yamazaki in the February 2023 issue of the monthly publication Ushio; “A Story about Ozu and Shinyu Onsen”)
Various people came to visit Ozu.
This happened when Keiji Sada (father of both Kiichi and Kie Nakai), a well-known Showa period actor who appeared in many of Ozu’s films, came to Tateshina. He had a reservation at Tateshina Shinyu Onsen, and Tokuichi (a Shinyu Onsen employee) had intended to show him and his wife to the Yubae Room on the second floor with a good view. It was also Ozu’s favorite room.
“Ozu was concerned about the couple, and said, ‘Hey, Tokuichi, don’t show them to a room that requires stairs to get to.’ Keiji Sada’s wife was pregnant with Kie Nakai. This was an example of his thoughtfulness.”
Later, one after the other, Keiji Sada, Chishu Ryu, Kaneto Shindo, and others also acquired residences (villas) in Tateshina, making the area a place for filmmakers to interact.

It has been renovated into an old-fashioned Japanese-style room to recreate the appearance it had at the time. It now better reflects the world view of Yasujiro Ozu, one of Japan’s greatest film directors. Tateshina at twilight, with the light spreading over the heated table. The Yubae Room, with its hazy fleeting colors, conveys a sense of nostalgia.
The interior is decorated and arranged with attention to detail, and in consideration of elderly guests, it now has a bed while remain a Japanese-style room. There are two washbasins in the bathroom, with the lower washbasin positioned to be more comfortable for small children to use.
We invite you to enjoy some precious time with your family, in a room that can accommodate up to three generations, just like the families in Ozu’s films.

Film Director Yasujiro Ozu and Screenwriter Kogo NodaMugeisou / Shin-Unkosou

Mugeisou
Mugeiso is a thatched-roof mountain villa in Pool Taira, Tateshina. Master filmmaker Yasujiro Ozu worked and entertained guests here in his later years. It is open to the public free of charge during film festivals.

Shin-Unkosou
A small mountain villa opened by screenwriter, Kogo Noda, on the Tateshina highlands as a place to rest and nurture creativity. The name comes from his desire for “the mountains to summon the clouds, and for the clouds to summon people,” a twist of humor typical of a filmmaker.
*All photos of Yasujiro Ozu and Kogo Noda were provided by Akiko Ozu, niece of Yasujiro Ozu and Office Oz representative; Hideyuki Nagai, nephew of Yasujiro Ozu; and Michiko Yamauchi, granddaughter of Kogo Noda.
